Uganda and my heart....

Last Sunday, I walked through "Step into Africa" with my sunday school class. It was an exhibit hosted at SMU by WorldVision. Check it out here: WorldVisionExperience

I had already signed up to volunteer at it the following weekend (today), but was excited to get to experience it early. You basically go through the life a child in Africa. It is a real child and you have an audio player that talks you through it all. It is heart breaking and really opens your eyes to the needs in your world. At the end you get a chance to "adopt" a child through Worldvision. I left that day with a new "daughter"... meet Grace....
Grace is 9 years old and lives in Uganda. Her birthday is the day before mine! She is adorable. I make a monthly payment that helps to make sure Grace has food, shelter, education, and medical needs. WorldVision is an amazing organization. So many of us are blessed with so much, and there are so many out there who need our help. If you are interested in adopting a child, visit WorldVision. Your donation will go so far!

After going through the experience last Sunday and "adopting" Grace, my heart just felt like it was in Uganda. Then on Monday I stumbled across this girl's blog: Katie. Katie is a girl who is from Tennessee, but moved to Uganda a few years ago. She is close to my age and has been there working for God ever since. She has adopted 14 girls and helped hundreds of others. Her story is so unique, and it captured my heart. Go read her blog- it will be worth every minute.

Now, I'm at a point where a part of my heart is in Africa. I've never even been to Uganda, but I want to be there. It will be hard work and draining work and depressing work- but I want to go. God wants me to go. I dont know when the opportunity will arise. I only ask that you pray for me- that God will open a door for me to go and that when that time comes, I will still be willing to go. And until then... pray for the children of Uganda. They face more heartache and pain everyday then most of us will ever come close to experiencing in our lifetimes.

God is good!

So.... there is some really exciting news to share (not mine, but a friend's), but I've been sworn to secrecy! BUT... for those of you who are doubters.... GOD STILL ANSWERS PRAYERS! And I can't wait to share the story in a few weeks!!! :) God is so good!

Spring Break 2KX

What a crazy spring break! I spent most of the week from a beach chair looking at this....

It was so nice to get away to Florida for a week! It was nice to be a complete beach bum and lay around (in the heat!) for an entire week. It was exactly what I needed! I loved seeing my family and spending time with friends.

Sarah joined the Harwood clan on the trip, and she fit in rather nicely! We had so much fun! I am so blessed to have met Sarah and become friends with her. PCB will never be the same now that we've been there together! ha...

I also got to see some other dear friends while at the beach. For starters, I got to see my dear friend Christopher! He was staying in Destin but came over to PCB for a day to hang with us. The 6th floor kept us entertained (hahaha!) and I was so glad to get to see him! I also got to spend an evening with my dear friend Haley, but unfortunately we didn't take a picture together. I also got to grab dinner with one of my best friends from highschool, Pair! It was so great to see her. It blesses me in so many ways when we get to catch up! I was so thankful to get to see some old friends!

And I ended the week looking at this....
Yes, that's right. It snowed AGAIN in Dallas. Who would have thought that I'd move to Texas and experience more snow in one year than I ever did in Alabama? It was beautiful this morning, but I'm SO tired of being COLD! I want to go back to the beach where it was WARM! Is it summer yet???
(answer: no! 10 more weeks until that! :) )

TAKS for 5th grade is in 11 school days. While I'm not ready to go back tomorrow (literally- I haven't done my lesson plans or anything!), I am ready to get these next three weeks over and done with! Dad and Chase are coming to Austin for Easter, so I look forward to spending family time then. I'm going to end with a picture of what Julio did all of break, and what we are about to end this break with together!

(And NO... that is not my Texas blanket. This was taken when Ashley and Patrick were dog sitting this week! :) )

Spring Break Down in Panama...

In five days I will be headed to the beautiful sunny shores of Florida with Holly and Sarah. We will be meeting our dad, brother, and cousin for a few days in the SUN! (hopefully!) I have purchased bathing suits, skirts, and dresses and just keeping my fingers crossed that it will be warm enough to actually wear them! I could not be more excited about this week of break! I am also excited because I will get to see some 'bama friends who will also be spending their spring break there! I get to see Haley, Chris, Cindy, and who knows who else. I am so excited... this is a much needed break! This spring break will be nowhere near as crazy as last spring break, but still tons of fun! I CANT WAIT!

CATCH UP!

What did the big tomato say to the little tomato? CATCH UP! (or ketchup in their case!) - told to me by one of my students

No but for real, I need to catch up!

Where has the time gone? Is tomorrow seriously the last school day before March? I can't believe how fast my first year of teaching is going. Grades were due today for the fourth six weeks... that means only 12 more weeks of school and then it's summer. It is flying by! We only have four school weeks left until TAKS, and when I think about that, I kind of want to throw up. So instead, I'm not thinking about it!!!

Two weekends ago Chase came for a visit in the big D. We had a blast! I wish that Chase could come visit EVERY weekend. He was here for valentine's day, and there is no other way I would have wanted to spend v-day than with my favorite little bro! We also met Kevin and Alicean in Waco one night while he was here, and it was nice to have all the sibs reunited :)

Last weekend Kevin and Alicean came to Dallas and we all went to dinner at Medeival Times... it was so much fun! We acted like idiots and cheered like crazy for the green knight (our section). He ended up being the bad guy, but we kept cheering anyway. Bad guys win every now and then, right? Wrong. He didn't win, but it was fun nonetheless! And it made me very thankful that someone invented silverware... haha!

We are just two short weeks away from spring break, and I couldn't be more excited! Holly, Sarah (a friend from Dallas), and I are road tripping it to the beautiful sunny shores of Florida- Panama City to be exact! We will be meeting my dad, cousin, younger brother, and one of my brother's friends for a week in the fun and the sun. I'm praying for WARM weather because I am so tired of being cold. Don't get me wrong, I love cold weather, I'm just ready for spring!!! If any of you will be in PCB or Destin for spring break, let me know!! We will have to meet up!!!

Overall, life is great in Texas. I couldn't be happier with my choice to live here! My students are great and I'm so blessed to love my school and my co-workers. It's stressful right now as we finish up TAKS material, but I love my job and wouldn't trade it for anything. All right, well I've gotta go pick the students up from guidance... until next time....

ROLL TIDE! (tomorrow is jersey day at school- I am passing on my usual julio jones jersey and wearing my NATIONAL CHAMPIONS shirt to school. I will be wearing it proudly amongst my Texas co-workers!)

Meet the Six!

Well, Erin requested it, but the more I thought about it, it didn't seem right to have a "Meet Erin Monday" without having a Meet Betsy, Tiffany, and Julie along with her... SO, I'm going to do a bundle of meets today... Today is "Meet THE SIX Monday"!Meet Tiffany. I met Tiffany my sophomore year at Alabama... we worked at the good ol' Supe Store together! I knew right away that we would be friends. She had a smile on her face and plenty of laughs. She is seriously the happiest person I know. I have never seen her sad or mad. She takes everything in stride and is always a blast to be around. She is also the "country girl" of our group. Tiffany grew up on a farm in Hackleburg, Alabama. We enjoyed several trips home to the farm! Tiffany moved back to Hackleburg after graduation and teaches kindergarten. She is a wonderful kindergarten teacher, that is her true life's calling! She is engaged to one of the best guys I know, and I can't wait until their wedding day.
Meet Erin. I met Erin my junior year at Alabama. We were in the same section in the College of Education. We didn't really become good friends until our senior year though. Erin is the cajun of the group. She is originally from Baton Rouge, Louisiana! She is still living in Tuscaloosa, and has a long-term sub job teaching fourth grade. She is ALSO in grad school at UA. I don't know how she jungles it all, but she does it wonderfully! She is also one of the smartest people I know.
Meet Julie. I met Julie my sophomore year at Alabama, working at the good ol' Supe Store. We spent many hours checking people out at the registers and talking about life. She is the most fun person I have ever been friends with. She always has fun things planned for us to do-- you can guarantee that if you are hanging out with Julie, you won't be bored. She is the planner of the group and planned many trips for us, including the infamous Memphis trip. She is so organized, and so funny. Another reason I love Julie so much is because she is my sister's soulmate! Not in the lovey dovey sense, but in the sense that they complete each other- Julie understands Holly sometimes more than I do, and for that I am so grateful. Julie is now living in Cullman, Alabama and working for the University of Alabama as an advisor at Wallace State!
Meet Betsy. Betsy is our Cali girl. I met Betsy my junior year at Alabama. We were in the same education section. We COULD have met our freshmen year, because we later found out that we were in the same theater class! But we didn't meet until junior year. Betsy is originally from Pleasanton, California which is near San Francisco. I don't think I would have survived my last year in college without her. Betsy and I were constantly cracking jokes during class, giving each other the eye during funny/awkward situations, and laughing at every little thing. We shared many a laugh! Betsy is now living back in Pleasanton where she is teaching fifth grade.
If you haven't caught on yet, we were all education majors together at the University of Alabama. Betsy, Erin, Tiffany, and I were in the same section. Julie and Holly were in the same section. We all bonded pretty quickly. We ended up doing everything together senior year. Senior year would not have been the same without them!
They were basically my family senior year. When I needed someone, I called one of them. When i was bored, I called one of them. When I needed to do homework, I called one of them. When I needed someone to distract me from homework, I called them. When I wanted to get out of town, I called them. When I wanted to go out on the town, I called them. They were my family.
We shared many laughs. Alot of the time when you put a group of girls together, you have a lot of fighting and arguing and drama. But not with us! We just laughed and had fun and enjoyed life together. When I think of the six, I think of laughs and good times. So many good times that I can't even recount them all!

Our favorite hangout was The Houndstooth, which is a bar in Tuscaloosa. We met up there many times! We would sit at a table and watch football games, basketball games, and just hang out. It was "our place" and I miss our hang out time there so much! The best trip we went on was MLK weekend of '09. We took a trip to Memphis, Tennessee and had a BLAST. We went to the Peabody and saw the ducks, ate at rendezvous, spent hours at graceland, and ended the night on beale st. It was literally the best day of the entire year!!!
We graduated in May, and a few days later we were seperated. Betsy flew home to California and Tiffany moved back to Hackleburg. Holly and I moved to Texas in July and Julie moved to Cullman in August. Erin stayed in Tuscaloosa. We are now all over the country, and I miss being all together. I have seen each of them since we moved, but not at the same time. I miss seeing them all together. We are trying to plan a reunion this summer, and I hope it happens. I miss the six, and I miss our laughs together! College life would have been so different without them. I am so blessed to have them in my life!

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow....

Dallas had record breaking snow yesterday! It started snowing at 3AM and didn't stop until about 1AM this morning! 21 hours STRAIGHT! And when I say straight, i mean STRAIGHT. I don't think it stopped snowing at all! We had 9 1/2 inches at my apartment. I have never in my life seen that much snow!
This is what I woke up to on Thursday morning at 6AM....
Julio in the snow! He wasn't sure what to think of it, but I'm pretty sure he hated it!

This was the snow this morning! You can't even see the sidewalks it's so deep! isn't it beautiful!?!?And this is our snowman! His name is Al. I've never made a completely WHITE snow man with no grass or dirt in him! I've also never rolled a snowman like I did today... you could just roll it and it'd get bigger and bigger! In Alabama, you just gotta walk around collecting snow and compacting it together! And I have also never built a snow man and still had tons of snow around! It was so much fun!

And now I'm about to head to the airport to pick up my younger brother, who is coming to spend a weekend with his big sisters in the big D! I'm so excited about seeing him!!
