On January 13, 2011 our school had early dismissal. During the craziness of our dismissal, there was an accident involving one of our first grade students. He was run over by a car and his mother was pinned between that car and another car. His name is Misael and he is still in the hospital. He has had multiple surgeries. His brain had fluid on it, and they have tried to do surgery but can't find a way that will work. He has tubes in his brain draining the fluid. Once he can finally be released from the hospital, he will spend quite a while in a rehab facility that is quite expensive. He will need this rehab in order to improve. His mother has also had to have multiple surgeries on her leg and ankle. The family's insurance ran out weeks ago, and they are going to have a massive hospital bill. Our school has been working hard to raise money! We have had a program called "basketball for our buddy" which is similar to jump rope for heart. The students raised their own money and then had a celebration where they shot basketballs. We have sold lolligrams (sucker and card) for Valentine's Day, as well as many other small projects. The students raised $18,000!!! It is a huge amount for little kids to raise, but there is still much more that little Misael's family will need.
The teachers at my school have been challenged to raise the same amount of money as the students did! We hope to raise more.
